A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 91-year-old man died following a "serious assault" in his home, police said.

The pensioner's son arrived at his home in Tottenham, north London, in the evening of December 29 to discover his father was suffering from head injuries, officers said.

Paramedics were called to the address in Tower Gardens Road and the man was taken to the Royal London Hospital where he died on January 6.

A post-mortem examination revealed the pensioner, who has not been named, died as a result of head injuries and pneumonia, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

The spokesman said: "A 49-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder. She is in police custody at a east London police station.

"It is believed the suspect was known to the victim.

"Inquiries continue."

Detective Chief Inspector John Oldham added: "We are appealing for information from anyone who noticed anything suspicious while in or near to Tower Gardens Road, Tottenham, on December 29 2010 between approximately 3pm and 4pm to come forward and help catch whoever is responsible for this awful assault."
