Hulk Hogan is still popular because he represents the wrestling that a lot of fans grew up with in the late 80's and early 90's, although even back then I thought the guy's ego was out of control. Personally, my favourite back then was Ultimate Warrior, who unlike Hogan, had the decency to retire and STAY RETIRED. Yes, Warrior was a wacko, but that's what we all loved about him.

Hogan, follow the examples of Warrior, Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin. QUIT WHILE YOU'RE AHEAD! AND LEAVE THEM WANTING MORE!

There is nothing great about Hogan anymore. He was great before though because he gave people something to believe in. He was like a real life comic book hero. He stood up for what was right, he represented his country to the fullest. He gave the fans positive messages like, stay in school, eat right, repect your country and respect yourself. Not to mention even though he had next to no wrestling skill he was fun to watch in the ring because of his character all of his matches where good vs evil.
