It feels like GTA V is already on every platform available considering the game has been out for many years by this point and straddled several generations of hardware. However, there is one mainstream platform where the game isn’t playable - Nintendo Switch.

It may seem obvious as to why the biggest game of the last ten years doesn’t feature on Nintendo’s handheld hybrid. There is, of course, the content of the game which is decidedly adult in nature, but there would also be concerns as to how well the game would run on the aging hardware.

Well, you can strike off that latter comment because one person is porting the game over to the Switch by using an official development kit, along with Rockstar’s leaked data. So far, they’ve managed to get the prologue up and running on the Nintendo Switch, but how much more we will see is up for debate.

Rockstar Games, will allow the project to continue. Both companies are quick to send cease and desist letters to modders and creators who use their products in such a way. It would be a shame to see this project go the way of many others as there would be many players that would love a chance to play GTA V on a handheld.

Of course, we may see an official version somewhere down the line, perhaps even on the next generation of Nintendo hardware. Grand Theft Auto has had a great relationship with Nintendo hardware in the past with the Nintendo DS spin-off titles, but the more recent 3D releases are notably absent.

Here’s hoping that this unofficial porting of the best-selling game survives long enough to be a proof of concept that will get the right people thinking about a partnership between Nintendo and Rockstar Games once again.
