Default Bent in, Lampard out for England

Darren Bent will make his England debut against Uruguay, while Frank Lampard will play no part due to injury.

Sven Goran Eriksson has decided to name his side to face the South Americans on Wednesday, with Bent - as expected - handed a debut.

The Charlton striker has enjoyed a fine debut campaign in The Premiership since his summer switch to Charlton and he will now be given an opportunity to demonstrate he is capable of performing on the international stage.

Bent is vying for the remaining fourth striking spot in England's squad, with Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch and Michael Owen looking certain to have already booked their place on the plane for Germany.

If Bent impresses in midweek then he could leap-frog Jermain Defoe in Eriksson's pecking order, with the Tottenham man to start against Uruguay on the bench.

Meanwhile, Lampard will be rested as he has a 'tight hamstring' and his place will go to Michael Carrick, another player still not certain of a World Cup place.

"Frank Lampard picked up a tight hamstring during training and was immediately withdrawn by England's medical staff as we don't want to take any risks. He will travel back to London tonight," said an FA spokesman.

Wayne Bridge is another handed a chance to prove he has recaptured the type of form that once made a certain deputy to Ashley Cole, prior to the horrendous injury he suffered at St James' Park last season.

The Chelsea left back, currently on-loan at Fulham, has impressed everyone at Craven Cottage and seems more than likely to travel providing he maintains fitness between now and the season's conclusion.

The rest of England's side is as expected and is listed in full below.
Robinson, G Neville, Bridge, Ferdinand, Terry, Beckham, Gerrard, Carrick, J Cole, Rooney, Bent.
