Joaquin Phoenix, star of the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, has emerged unscathed after his car overturned in Los Angeles following brake failure.

The 31-year-old actor, Bafta-nominated for his role as singer Cash, lost control of his car and collided with another vehicle, police said.

Phoenix was wearing his seat belt and walked away from the scene after being helped out by a passer-by.

The actor is expected to attend the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday.

Breakdown reports

Phoenix was driving eastbound above Sunset Strip at approximately 1450 local time (2250 GMT), when he realised his brakes were not working, said police officer Jason Lee.

His vehicle collided with another car, also travelling eastbound. Neither party was injured.

Phoenix won a Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical earlier this month for his role in Walk the Line, in which he stars opposite Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash.

The actor, brother of Stand By Me star River Phoenix who died from a drug overdose in 1993, denied reports of a breakdown while working on the film last year.
