Dave Bautista has officially finalized a deal to play Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War series.

Bautista will replace Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast as Kratos but had to leave the show after suffering a serious injury on set. Hurst reportedly tore his bicep while performing a stunt in late June, around four months into filming.

As Deadline reported, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television began talks with Bautista about taking over the role after Hurst’s injury.

The recasting emerges as a major change for the highly anticipated God of War adaptation. Hurst had already filmed a lot of material. However, that footage is reportedly not expected to be used. Instead, the production will restart with Bautista playing Kratos.

Kratos is one of the strongest and most recognizable characters in video games. The role requires an actor who can handle intense fight scenes while also showing the character’s emotional side. Bautista seems like a natural fit for the job. His years as a pro wrestler gives him the unique ability to portray the physicality and vulnerability that the role requires. Playing the legendary video game character is another feather in the cap of Batista’s flourishing acting career.

He also recently underwent intense physical training for his role in the upcoming Highlander movie. That experience should aid in his portrayal of Kratos.

Production is expected to resume in Vancouver around the middle of October, with preparations already underway. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye will also return.

While Bautista will replace Hurst as Kratos, the rest of the main cast remains in place. Callum Vinson will continue playing Atreus.

Other cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Ronald D. Moore is serving as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Maril Davis is also attached as an executive producer.

Prime Video’s God of War follows Kratos and his son as they travel to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ late wife, Faye. Kratos wants to teach Atreus how to become a better god, while Atreus slowly helps his father become a better person. Their complicated father-son relationship is one of the main parts of the story.
